If you grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, as I did, then you know the richness of our area's great culinary traditions! Just flip through the pages of The Scranton Times and you're bound to find announcements for festivals featuring one or another ethnic cuisine. One week it's dolmades and gyros at the Greek food festival in downtown Scranton ... another, its tripe and porchetta at the Felittese in Old Forge ... then kibbeh and spinach pies at the Maronite church's summer Lebanese food festival in West Scranton ... or wursts and schnitzels at the Waldorf's German Day on East Mountain ... or pierogi and 'piggies' at the Polish Food Festival in Dickson City ... or kugel and knishes at the Jewish Food Festival at Nay Aug ... or raita and rasmalai at the Diwali festival in North Scranton ... the list goes on and on and on.
Growing up in a Polish and Italian home, my comfort foods were things like lasagna, pastina, pigs in the blanket, and kluski. But I loved eating at friends' homes when they were having corned beef, pork and apples, chicken cordon bleu, and potch (a Welsh staple that was popular in our part of Scranton). Well, that's exactly what we imagined when we created MONDANO in Old Forge.
Mondano (which means 'worldly' in Italian) is a place where foods from around the world are available five nights a week. You can have some freshly dropped Polish kluski while your husband has handmade fettuccine and meatballs served in our five-hour Sunday sauce, all while your best friend is having a Greek-style pork chop and her husband is enjoying a German schnitzel.
